Thunderbird and Google Calendar

I love the idea of having a calendar online to be able to check it from anywhere, but I also like to have a local tool to add and edit my appointments. Since I don’t like outlook a lot (it does not run on my favorite OS) I was looking for an alternative. Now there is a calendar plugin for Thunderbird called “Lightning”, on its own already quiet good, but since Thunderbird 2.0 came out it works with a new plugin called “provider for Google Calendar”, this one makes it possible to import and use your google calendar directly with Lightning. Only a minor downside is that your local Thunderbird does not cache the calendar data from Google Calendar, so if you disconnect your laptop from the internet, you will not see the Google Calendar appointments. An explanation on how to do it you can find here

What would be a better way to start this blog then to explain a bit the how and why of my nickname.

My nickname was originally Ghost, refering to the package created by symantec.
At the time I found this one of the best software packages around (times around the windows 9x era)

Since this nickname was usually taken on irc and it sounded a bit unfriendly I changed it to Ghosty.
Over time however I discovered that the nickname had even more meanings than I realised at the time that I started using it.

  • if you transform my nickname a bit it sounds like my real last name.
  • furthermore is a ghost a creature that wanders around places and I am wandering around the wonderful internet.
  • ghost-hour: usually you still find me awake during these hours due to my pc addiction.
  • I use the word “geestig” a lot (free translation ghost-like, in dutch this means funny)
